I have a viewpoint - not one over which I claim authorship, but I have not seen espoused as a strategic approach - and that is that many (all?) environmental issues arise from lack of energy density. For the moment, consider urban waste management, including sewage. Cook *anything* at plasma-like temperatures *and* manage the output gas flow and -lo!- you have material resources 101 solved. Landfill volume diminishes. Metals are recovered. Carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus reduced to elemental form.

Well, that was interesting! One point I will note (of which I am sure you are aware) is the dichotomy between decision-takers' access to objective information and their being driven by what they perceive as their constityents'. I worked for 25 years at the UN agency responsible for environmental information at intergovernmental levels ( also supports UNSCEAR) and have seen repeatedly how the realpolitiks of concern and fear trump any lip service to objectivity and rationality.
